Virgin Galactic unveils rocket plane thrill ride

MOJAVE, Calif.--Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson and legendary aircraft designer Burt Rutan, whose SpaceShipOne took the $10 million Ansari X Prize in 2004, unveiled the VSS Enterprise Monday, a sleek commercial rocket plane that represents the ultimate thrill ride for well-heeled space tourists and amateur astronauts.

Seating six passengers and two pilots, Virgin Space Ship Enterprise--also known as SpaceShipTwo--will begin test flights next year with commercial launchings carrying paying customers starting after government regulatory requirements are met. More than 300 people have already put down deposits or paid the full $200,000 cost of a ticket for future sub-orbital up-and-down flights aboard the new spacecraft.

Most of those ticket holders, along with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, were on hand for the SpaceShipTwo unveiling Monday at Mojave airport, braving rain, high winds and frigid temperatures to witness the long-awaited roll-out.

Branson told the enthusiastic crowd that safety was Virgin Galactic's No. 1 priority and that "we will not be putting anybody into space until the test pilots have done many, many, many trips on this spaceship."

"Only when we are absolutely certain we can safely to space will we go into space," he said. "I promise you, it will be well and truly tested before we go into space."

Schwarzenegger said attending the unveiling was "one of the coolest things I've ever done." Describing Branson as "an extraordinary visionary," he called Rutan "one of the greatest space engineers of our time."

"Space is our next great frontier," he said. "When it comes to space enterprise, California is and always has been at the forefront and leading the way."

UPHAM, N.M. (KRQE) - That new spaceport being built near Truth or Consequences is now hosting its first tourists, but instead of strapping themselves into a rocket, they're boarding a bus.

They may not be launching from Spaceport America, but they are getting a close-up look not only at the work going into building it but the rich history of a once-dangerous part of the state.

The long road to Spaceport America from T or C transports tourists across vast country and through time.

"This country has more history than anyplace in the United States," science teacher Jerry Brown said.

Brown, a former NASA engineer, takes tourists on weekends to look over spaceport construction and learn about the heritage of the place.

The 400-year-old Camino Real, the royal road from Spanish Mexico to Santa Fe, still can be seen tracking through the scrub desert.

Along this stretch, called the Jornada del Muerto, which translates to Journey of the Dead Man, Brown said there are about 13 graves for every mile.

'When someone passed away, they didn't carry them any farther," Brown told one group of travelers. "They just stopped the caravan, they went and dug a hole, they had a Mass and then the caravan moved on."

There are also stories about later travelers from pioneers to desperados to Apache leader Geronimo.

"Part of our job is to give the people the history of New Mexico, the history of spaceflight, the history of this area and then a glimpse into the future," Brown said.

Brown started Jornada History Tours years ago in an old Volkswagen contraption fitted with airliner seats.

He has added a larger van for spaceport tours.

Alongside the old Camino Real the 10,000-foot Spaceport America runway is rapidly taking shape.

In 2011 Virgin Galactic says it will begin launching tourists here with each paying $200,000 for five minutes of floating around in space and gazing at the earth.

Today tourists visiting the construction site witness the gritty work required to create a space complex from scratch.

Engineer Steve Wade of David Montoya Construction said runway builders are taking extra steps to insure quality.

"Everything is very consistent," Wade said. "We can control the moisture content; we can control how much cement is put in there."

Crews are also proud of their recycling.

The asphalt machine is fired with waste oil, and some paving material comes from old pavement ripped out of highway projects.

"It makes me feel good knowing that not only are we making a high-quality product, but we are taking some unused refuse out of New Mexico and using it for a good purpose," Wade said.

When space travelers someday lift off from the site they will just continue a journey started many centuries ago, according to Brown.

"What an epic history for humans to be able to do that entire journey from walking barefooted up this trail to blasting 65 miles into the air above this trail," he said.

First commercial spacecraft ever

SpaceShipTwo will be the first commercial spaceship ever built. Funded by U.K. billionaire Richard Branson, it has been built with the support of famed aviation designer Burt Rutan.

Branson has already spent $200 million out of $450 million budget.

SpaceShipTwo is a replica of SpaceShipOne, first privately operated manned craft that completed the first privately funded human spaceflight on June 21, 2004.

But, at 60 feet long, it is double the size of SpaceShipOne, and can carry six passengers and two pilots.

The tests for the spaceship will start in the upcoming year. The flight, which will be two and a half hours long, will include some five minutes of weightlessness.

Virgin Galactic has already placed orders of three carrier planes and five spaceships with Spaceship Co., a joint venture between Virgin and Northrop Grumman Corp.’s Scaled Composites unit.

After five years of construction, the company will take the wraps off its suborbital passenger spaceship in the Mojave Desert today.

Much awaited launch
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger will unveil Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo model, with the first flight expected to take off from Spaceport America, New Mexico within the next few years.

Around 300 wealthy would-be astronauts, including singer Sarah Brightman, physicist Stephen Hawking, and X-Men director Bryan Singer, have already paid around $200,000 each and are eagerly waiting for the first glimpse of the spaceship.

Richard Branson, chairman of Virgin Galactic, will show off the first private aircraft in history designed to carry tourists into space.

Branson, who promised in July 2009 at the Oshkosh Air Show that the spaceplane would be unveiled in December, said test flights will begin following the festive event.

 

The Virgin Galactic spaceline has plans on the table to operate a fleet of five such craft, and the first paying customers are expected to fly by 2011. Initial flights are intended to launch from Spaceport America, New Mexico, according to the company.

The innovative technology involved in the project is expected to create an especially wide opening for publicity of the spacecraft due to the unique aerodynamic design of the aircraft, which is unlike anything ever before created. Officials said the ship is the first ever to be composed entirely of carbon alloy.

The project is based in part on technology developed for a previous spaceplane model, SpaceShip1, licensed from Mojave Aerospace Ventures and held by Paul Allen. It is considered a suborbital spaceplane, designed specifically for carrying space tourists, and was developed under a joint venture between Scaled Composites and Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group.

SpaceShip2 will be able to carry six passengers and two pilots, and will reach 4,200 kilometers per hour (2,600 miles per hour), using a single hybrid rocket motor. It will launch at 15,200 meters (50,000 feet) from its mother ship, WhiteKnight2, and will use a feathered re-entry system, feasible due to the low speed of re-entry. All seats will recline back during landing to decrease the discomfort of G-forces.

Israeli representatives will also have a place of honor at the event -- the IsraeliGalatic Dreamlines firm won the bid to sell tickets in Israel for tours in space. The company reports that a ticket will cost a happy tourist $200,000, with a deposit of 50 percent required in advance to reserve the seat.

The spaceship symbolizes the next step towards privatization of space travel for the general public," said Eliran Yaron, CEO of Galatic Dreamlines. Pleasure that until now was limited to astronauts or owners of great fortunes who allowed themselves to pay $20 million, will now be open to more and more people. The first spaceship pilots will enjoy three days of pre-flight preparation and acclimatization to change in the gravitational forces, and then will blast off into the atmosphere at eight times the speed of sound.

Thus far some 300 tickets have been purchased by adventurous tourists around the globe, and the sum total of the of the deposits paid to fly on the first spaceship tourism flight stands at $40 million

Welcome Center Planned for Downtown Truth or Consequences

The Board of Directors of the New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) has voted to establish a welcome center for Spaceport America in downtown Truth or Consequences (T or C), New Mexico. With the support of local residents who want the center to be located downtown, the NMSA has agreed to lease an old fire station from the T or C city government.

A welcome center is also planned for the village of Hatch, NM, which is on the southern approach to Spaceport America.

Spaceport America Hardhat Tours Announced at ISPCS

LAS CRUCES, NM – Officials from the New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) announced that they will begin offering paid public hardhat tours of the Spaceport America construction site beginning December 2009. The announcement came today at the International Symposium for Personal and Commercial Spaceflight (ISPCS) taking place at New Mexico State University (NMSU), which will host a private hard hat tour of the spaceport site as part of its program for registered participants on Friday, October 23.

The tours will highlight New Mexico history spanning from Spanish conquistores and pioneer rocket research to the new commercial space industry. Tour participants will receive an on-site tour of the construction site including the runway and vertical launch facility. Tour details and reservation forms will be available on the Spaceport America website (www.spaceportamerica.com) by mid- November.

Terminal Hangar Facility Bids Open

The New Mexico Spaceport Authority (NMSA) has initiated the bid process for the construction of the main Terminal Hangar Facility at Spaceport America. This building will house the NMSA’s Operations and Public/Visitor Experience and Virgin Galactic’s Operation. NMSA and Virgin Galactic entered a 20-year lease with the State of New Mexico on December 31, 2008. The 110,152-square foot Terminal Hangar Facility was designed by URS/Foster + Partners and is to be built in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED rating system. It will set the standard for environmentally sound design for similar structures worldwide. The lump-sum bid was advertised on Thursday, October 15. Interested contractors will need to attend a mandatory pre-bid conference at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27, at the Ralph Edwards Civic Center in Truth or Consequences, NM. A tour of the Spaceport America project site will take place immediately after the pre-bid meeting for those who wish to participate.. Bids will be opened on November 13, 2009. Spaceport signs electric agreement

LAS CRUCES — The New Mexico Spaceport Authority will get its electricity from Sierra Electric Cooperative under a new agreement.
Sierra Electric Cooperative will build a substation and a six-mile distribution line to connect the spaceport to outside transmission lines.
Spaceport America's executive director Steve Landeene says the off-site electrical system agreement builds on an earlier agreement signed in April 2008.
The cooperative's general manager, Steve Gee, says the spaceport will be a catalyst for new developments that will benefit the community and the state.
Spaceport America expects to have a 10,000-foot runway completed by next summer and a hangar finished by early 2011.

Spaceport officials launch test flight

UPHAM, N.M. — Officials say Lockheed Martin successfully launched a test flight vehicle over the weekend at New Mexico's spaceport.

Spaceport officials say the brief flight Saturday was not publicized in advance because Lockheed Martin is testing "proprietary advanced launch technologies."

The launch was overseen by UP Aerospace, the third launch this year by the Colorado-based firm. The company plans to double its number of customer launches from Spaceport America to six or more in 2010 as demand for the company's services increases.

In May, UP Aerospace provided services for an educational launch for New Mexico students, and in August, the firm did a successful test flight launch for Florida-based Moog-FTS. UP Aerospace first launched from Spaceport America in September 2006.

The strip is designed for the site's day-to-day operations, including flights that will take tourists into space.

LAS CRUCES — Spaceport America is now licensed for liftoff.

Spaceport officials announced 12/16/2008 that the Federal Aviation Administration's associate administrator for Commercial Space Transportation has granted the spaceport a license for vertical and horizontal launches. The license was issued following the completion of an Environmental Impact Study Record of Decision.

"These two governmental approvals are the next steps along the road to a fully operational spaceport," said Spaceport Authority Director Steve Landeene. He noted that federal licensing was one of the conditions the state Legislature had require for the release of spaceport funding.

Landeene said the nation's first purpose-built commercial spaceport is on track to begin construction in early 2009. Daniela Glick, who chairs the Spaceport Authority Board, added that construction is already under way on the road leading to the spaceport, and the final design for the terminal and hangar facility is nearly complete.
